I walked her to the bus stop. It was cold, dark and only couple hours before Friday the 13th, when we had to take the nasty electrodynamics midterm that she barely studied for, because she has too many popular friends who insist on keeping her busy. I tried my best to summarize the key concepts, but it was hopeless. She was going to fail.

Anyone else would be freaking out, maybe even crying, but not this woman. As we walked briskly past the street bums on Telegraph, who smell like dog piss, She radiated nothing but cheery optimism. She laughed, told jokes, even hummed a little tune.

She has been a lone beacon of sunshine in my dreadful 10am class ever since I first saw her at the beginning of this semester. She was texting during the first lecture, looking clearly bored. I smiled at her, and she smiled back. Since then I had faithfully walked her to the next class everyday, often offering to carry her backpack. Those short 4-5 minute walks from Leconte to Campbell were the highlight of my day. And the two times I ran into her outside of class were like winning the lottery.

That night, as we waited for the bus. I wanted desparately to try my luck. I need to get closer to her, but was an nerve-wracking experience. I just stared at her eyes as she talked about her exciting winter break plans, something that involved going to southern California, where it's warm. The bus was blissfully late, so we stood in the cold a whole 15 minutes. She radiated a strange aura that drew me closer and closer to her, until our lips were only a few inches a part.

I stared at her deep brown eyes. then looked at her lips. she didn't flinch. she didn't move away. it was like i didn't scare her at all. i didn't know what to do. i froze. After a couple seconds of awkward silence. i turned away, looked on the ground, looked up to the sky, then looked at her and said, "you're a long term project."

Then the bus came. She gave me a hug and hopped on the bus.
